The Odyssey is an EPIC - a long narrative poem about important events in the history or folklore of a culture. The epic hero (the larger-than-life character in an epic) demonstrates traits that are valued by the society.

Homer describes the brave leader Odysseus in the opening, and we see Odysseus in action throughout Part 1. As our main character, he is larger than life, striving to have the influence and courage to get him and his men back home to Ithaca. However, part of being a great leader is being able to get people to follow regardless of the circumstances.

Analyze Odysseus and his actions throughout Part 1. Does he live up to the hype as Homer describes him or does he fall short? To do this, scan back through your questions and the text to find areas that describe Odysseus: his actions, his emotions, his words to his men, his thoughts on their behavior, and his reactions to their circumstances. How do you think he is doing as our hero? How would you rate him? Is he falling short or living up to expectations? Where? How?

Open the attached chart and fill it in by gathering a list of at least 6 descriptions. Write the line number down and interpret what you have recorded. What has Odysseus done to earn the title of the hero? What has Odysseus done that has caused the downfall of his men?
